Oral pathology

What does it mean

Oral pathology is the specialty that covers diagnosis and treatment of diseases that occur on the oral mucosa and neighboring anatomical regions. It lies on the border between dentistry and various other medical specialties and therefore often requires an interdisciplinary consultation.

Establishing a correct diagnosis in oral pathology is based both on a complex examination of the patient, but also on clinical experience of the specialist.

Although the presence of multiple injuries in the mouth is often noticed by the patient due to the area’s high sensibility, most often they are treated with indifference or ignored by patients. In some cases, these injuries can even be early signs of systemic diseases or have a malign potential in the absence of a proper treatment.

Regular checkups performed by a well prepared general dentist, accompanied whenever is needed by a mouth screening, can help keeping long-term oral health.
